The Benefits of Foam Rolling

Foam rolling is a popular form of self-myofascial release, a technique that involves applying pressure to trigger points in the muscles to alleviate pain, increase range of motion, and improve overall muscle function. Foam rolling can have several benefits for injuries, especially soft tissue injuries such as muscle strains and sprains

Some of the benefits of using a foam roller:

  1. Increased flexibility: Foam rolling can help to break up knots in the muscles which can lead to improved flexibility and range of motion.
  2. Reduced muscle soreness: Foam rolling has been shown to help reduce muscle soreness after exercise, allowing for faster recovery and improved performance.
  3. Improved circulation: Foam rolling can help to improve blood flow and oxygen delivery to the muscles, which can help to reduce muscle fatigue and improve overall muscle function.

Reduced risk of injury: By improving flexibility, reducing muscle soreness, and improving circulation, foam rolling can help to reduce the risk of injury during exercise.

Kinesiologists may use foam rolling as part of a warm-up or cool-down routine. We recommend using foam rolling before and after exercising. When used before exercising, foam rolling can help to prepare the muscles and fascia for activity, improve range of motion, and reduce the risk of injury. When used after exercising, foam rolling can help to reduce muscle soreness, improve recovery time, and promote relaxation.

At Kenzie Wellness Centre, our kinesiologists suggest almost every single patient to have a foam roller at home to use every single day as a way to improve muscle function, reduce soreness, and prevent injury.
